When you work on a computer for most of the day, it’s handy to have a few tools that save time and give you a bit of a break. In this April edition, ResearchNOTES highlights a few productivity tools that I can’t do without… To make sure the links on my websites are all in working order, I use Xenu’s Link Sleuth, a piece of free software found at digbig.com/4yppd. I’ve also used Link Sleuth when I had to create a list of all the links on a website—Link Sleuth will create a report in seconds. Whenever I need to shorten a URL to fit in an email or other document, I use DigBig (www.digbig.com). You have to register and login (free), but that extra step lets you see all your shortened URLs and the number of hits they received. Links are also monitored by DigBig staff (real people), so that only work-related (no spam) sites are stored with Digbig URLs. SnagIt, screen-capture software from TechSmith, has helped me crop photos, create professional-looking presentation slides, and snag those web pages that refuse to format for printing. It’s not free, but at $49.95 it’s more than paid for itself in my time. You can get a free trial at digbig.com/4yppe. Is there anything that you could add to this list? What makes your computer-related work a lot easier for you? Take care--Marcy Marcy Phelps Phelps Research Author, Research on Main Street: Using the Web to Find Local Business and Market Information (Forthcoming) +1 303.239.0657 Email: mphelps@phelpsresearch.com Web: www.phelpsresearch.com Blog: www.MarcyPhelps.com |
