United States Government 2.0

Web 2.0 tools, including blogs, microblogs, RSS feeds, and forums, are quickly being adopted by individuals and businesses. Not to be left out, the U.S. government is quickly getting on the social-media bandwagon. The Obama administration has even named an official Director of New Media for the White House. This month’s ResearchNOTES includes some new ways of getting U.S. government information...

The White House website now has a blog (http://www.whitehouse.gov/blog/). Recent topics have included budget issues, the new White House Kitchen Garden, and a report on the Fiscal Responsibility Summit. The blog makes heavy use of videos, photos, and guest bloggers. Another blog that you might want to check out is Dipnote, from the U.S. State Department (http://blogs.state.gov).

GovTwit (http://digbig.com/4ymfc), from consulting firm BearingPoint, is a directory of government twitterers. It was published in November 2008, but updates can be found – of course – by following GovTwit on Twitter at http://twitter.com/GovTwit.

RSS feeds are a great way to receive the latest news and updates from government agencies. The U.S. Government RSS Library, at http://digbig.com/4ymfd, is a collection of links to government feeds, organized by topic. Learn about recalls, homeland security issues, census information, White House speeches, and much more.

Enjoy! - Marcy
