A Night at the Museum

Museums have always been filled with educational sights and sounds, but today they are reaching beyond their walls and onto the Internet. Many have developed extensive web-based collections of resources for learning, intended for adults and children alike. This month's ResearchNOTES features some museum websites that make learning fun[...]

The Exploratorium, one of the first science museums to go online, now has more than 18,000 pages on its site at http://exploratorium.edu/. The Digital Library, found at http://exploratorium.edu/educate/dl.html, is the easiest way to access the museum's vast collection of electronic resources, including hands-on activities and webcasts.

At http://www.tate.org.uk/, you can learn about the collections of the Tate art museums. Follow links for the Online Learning or Research sections of the site, and you'll find in-depth information about works and artists. A fun feature is the Google Street View of locations depicted in works of art.

Visit the Virtual Museum of Canada, at http://www.museevirtuel-virtualmuseum.ca, which brings the collections of dozens of Canadian museum together in its virtual exhibits, image gallery, and other interactive learning resources. There's a section just for teachers, too, with lesson plans that can be searched by grade level.

Enjoy these sites, and have fun learning!
